A branch or subespecialty of epidemiology that studies the role of social structures, processes, and factors in the production of health and disease in populations. It uses epidemiological knowledge, reasoning, and methods to study why and how the distribution of health states is influenced by factors as ethnicity, socioeconomic status and position, social class, or environmental and housing conditions.
